A delicious morsel of musical tragedy
Tim Burton + Johnny Depp + musical + live action = a good show. Possibly a logical next step for Tim Burton, his dark style and muted palette couldn’t of suited this story better. Johnny Depp delivers his usual highly entertaining performance and it was good to see Fight Club’s Helena Carter pop up as the leading female – a Gothic match made in heaven to Mr. Depp.
At some points I felt that Sweeney Todd’s character could of had more depth as Depp’s performance lingers around his usual pirate character with singing rather than babbling. However the visual feast and delightful rendition of London counterbalance it somewhat. And, as everyone else (presumably marketing words instigated as word-of-mouth) says, the gore is executed in such way as to draw a giggle at every slash; though I thought the blood could of been a tad darker.
Don’t go and watch this if you hate musicals or are squeamish. And if you do like it and it gets you in the mood for more musicals then check out The Producers.
